Kitchen Design- When do finishes come in?

Have you decided to remodel or upgrade your kitchen and you're not quite sure where to start?  Well, we'd like to help you out in that process and offer advice on where your finishes should come in and the best way to choose them to ensure that you'll be satisfied with the end result.

Although you might be excited about choosing your finishes first,  your top priority should be thinking about space planning and workflow.   Start first with what you like best or the least in your current kitchen, decide what you absolutely need and definately want and make a list of those things.  If you are not familiar with the planning process, hiring a professional to help put those ideas into place is something we'd recommend.  Additional lighting, oversized appliances and sinks may need to be chosen at this point as it could effect the overall schematics of space.

Now that you have all the details on what space you have to work with, you can start to really focus on finishes and style.  If you're not sure what you like, browsing magazines, Pinterest or even your friends' homes can give you a good idea of styles that you're attracted to.  Finishes like flooring, cabinets, counters and backsplashes should be chosen together to make sure the look is cohesive.  Putting a palette together is a good idea, bring your cabinet sample into the flooring store or a sample of your counters with the cabinet in to choose your backsplash.   We always have professionals on hand to help you make choices, but it's a good idea to know what you like and the overall look you are going for as this will help us to steer you in the right direction.

Decorative tiles and fixtures will express your personality and style, but make sure whatever you choose is something you love and will love for a long time as these can be expensive to replace.

Choosing paint and accessories is most likely last in the process as they're easier to change out, but still should be chosen along with your palette and other choices in mind as you'll want to make sure that everything comes together in the end.

Breaking down this process will allow you to focus on one element at a time and hopefully alleviate being too overwhelmed with the entire project. It may also help you to be more decisive in the decision making process, as space limitations, special appliances, finishes, etc. may alter your choices thus making some decisions much easier.
